Titled “Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor,” this survey of the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist spans the artist’s practice from the 1980s to the present day. In line with Rist’s consideration of museums to be “public living rooms,” the exhibition takes on an in-between, where the gallery space itself has been treated as an exterior environment, inviting viewers into individual spaces like homes, pavilions, and civic structures within. Conceived to remove the distance between technology and viewer, the artist’s works have been installed within larger environments, like a suite of oversized living room furniture acting as a seating area in which they can view the 1994 Das Zimmer or the sea of LED lights comprising Pixel Forest. The survey will remain open at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary through June 6, 2022.
