Presented by 180 Studios at 180 The Strand is the debut of a major video installation by Richard Mosse, shown in an exhibition with a suite of related large-scale photographs. Filmed in the Brazilian Amazon over the course of three years, Mosse’s Broken Spectre directs its spotlight on one of the most devastating yet ignored ecological crises in the world—the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Through satellite data and imagery, poignant portraiture and landscapes, micro-views of the location’s flora, and clips featuring words from Indigenous locals—like a Yanomami woman filmed exclaiming, “You white people, see our reality. Open your minds. Don’t let us talk so gallantly and do nothing. White people! Tell your fathers and mothers. Explain to them.”—Mosse’s visceral composition leaves viewers wondering how saving the Amazon isn’t already a global priority.
