Rick Lowe: Meditations on Social Sculpture

Often working in collaborative or public settings, the artist Rick Lowe has moved on to a new leg of a practice focused on “social sculpture” (a term coined by the German artist Joseph Beuys) in his solo exhibition at Gagosian. Tellingly titled “Meditations on Social Sculpture,” Lowe has presented a suite of new paintings and other works that are a result of his recent and ongoing social sculpture projects, Victoria Square Project and Project Row Houses. Derived from concepts meant to bring positive change to the public and shared spaces in a community—like a street of rundown houses transformed into a vibrant cultural area—Lowe’s featured works pose for viewers a new, conceptual way to consider equity and urban planning.
