Through October 15, PKM Gallery in Seoul is showing “Mind in Matter,” a solo exhibition of work by the late Chung Chang-Sup. Chung spent his life creating authentic Korean contemporary art, and the exhibition focuses on works from the latter part of his career, including his 1980s “Tak” series and 2000s “Meditation” series. “Tak” was created with a mixture of mulberry bark fiber (tak), the raw material of hanji, and water that was spread across canvas, resulting in a transparent finish. This series embraced the material at hand and sought to reveal the natural passage of time. “Meditation,” Chung’s last series before his passing, truly exhibits the artist’s evolution through sculptural surfaces that utilize the texture of tak combined with the pressing technique. “Meditation” is thought to embody the pinnacle of Chung’s creativity and lifelong artistic endeavor.
