Instead of typical artwork descriptions, collective Tercerunquinto’s exhibition “Obra gris: On Form and Color” is accompanied by a construction manual—how the parts and process come together with a backdrop to form a whole. Titled for the construction term “obra gris” (“gray work”), which denotes the stage of building before a work is considered final and complete, the collective presents its obra gris alluding to a final product to follow. The installation takes on the form of an abstracted cityscape of geometric shapes and a series of wall-hung combinations of angle and color, which pose for viewers at Proyectos Monclova an examination of the tensions that shape Mexican urban landscapes, executed through a lesson in building and construction—and in turn, what comes of the materials when their original structures have collapsed.
