Thread for a Web Begun

Billie Zangewa, MoAD

Open through February 27 at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is the Johannesburg-based artist Billie Zangewa‘s exhibition “Thread for a Web Begun.” Guest curated by Dexter Wimberly, the show presents the Malawian artist’s first solo U.S. museum presentation to include examples of the artist’s work from the past 15 years. In addition, new pieces made specifically for the show are seen. Throughout the space, visitors can expect to see the artist’s complex and relatable silk tapestries that explore “daily feminism” and the mundane tasks integrated into daily life. “I use fabric and sewing, which traditionally is a female pastime, to empower myself,” she said. “I tell my personal story, how it’s happening on the home front, and show the intimate life of a woman, which usually we’re not encouraged to do.”
