Tyler Mitchell’s newest photographic compositions are on view in his first London exhibition—a show at Gagosian‘s Davies Street space titled “Chrysalis”. Open through November 12, the latest happenings in Mitchell’s utopian visual universe are youthful figures that the artist has captured outdoors in upstate New York and in studios. These surreal scenarios depict Mitchell’s Black subjects safely in states of leisure that exude beauty, desire, and belonging. Featured works include those like the titular Chrysalis, where a male figure sleeps peacefully under mosquito netting, and a serene but peculiar scene in which a woman lounges in a fenced garden, her pensive stare suggesting an unspoken narrative in conjunction with the work’s title, Cage.
