On view at the Nasher Store Gallery of the Nasher Sculpture Center is “Grit/Grind,’’ an exhibition by Dallas-based artist Giovanni Valderas, focusing on the role of car culture and the American dream. In the gallery space, viewers will find a single object—a full-scale replica of a 1986 Nissan Sentra, under the form of a brightly colored piñata. Valderas’ installation takes its starting point from the American dream of freedom, mobility, and how owning a car has traditionally been associated with success, but it also explores the consequences of life among working poor families. “Grit/Grind’’ pays tribute to these communities while also denouncing the way they have been treated, through the humour and pathos created by this large car made from cheap materials.
