It comes as no surprise that the Burberry Winter 2024 collection offers up a litany of duffle coats, scarves, and moleskin trenches, functioning as a barrier between the wearer and the outside world. But with Daniel Lee at the brand’s helm, Burberry has found a way to make winter sexy.
Daniel Lee Looks to the Words of Amy Winehouse for Burberry
A medley of Amy Winehouse’s sultriest songs played as models took the stage, intercut with snippets of the singer talking for the fashion house’s runway show during London Fashion Week. Over the loudspeakers of Victoria Park, where the show took place, attendees heard Winehouse muse, “I felt there was nothing new coming out at the time that represented me, and what I feel. So I just started writing from my personal experience.”
It’s a sentiment that surely applies to Lee and his approach to Burberry. Since joining the brand as Chief Creative Officer in 2022, Lee has insisted on bringing Burberry back to its roots; here, he does just that. The collection is distinctively British, inspired by the landscapes and people of the UK and Ireland. British models, including Naomi Campbell, Agyness Deyn, and Lily Cole, all took the stage. Many of the show’s models held check folding umbrellas, nodding to the weather all British people know to be nearly unrelenting.
Burberry Designs Clothes “Fit for Rolling Around Outside”
Attendees sat on fluffy dark brown cushions atop green-tinted gravel, signifying yet another nod to the outside world where these pieces are meant to be adorned. Backstage, Lee remarked that these pieces are fit “for rolling around outside. They’re clothes you can live in.”
In this array of moody, wintry looks, deep V-cut sweaters are accompanied by floor-sweeping skirts with splits down the side; thick, cozy shearling jackets, wool overcoats, and earth-toned scarves all find themselves in the limelight. This collection also marks the debut of the traditional Burberry check in musty browns, bright, warm reds, and muted yellows—consistent with the designer’s ethos of simultaneously honoring and updating the brand’s traditions.
