Christopher Kane draws inspiration from unlikely sources – like protective plastic coverings for shoes and waterproof materials. Drawn to the way the nylon fabrics bunch and are made to be wiped clean, his fall/winter 2014-15 line is fashioned with this in mind.
The dresses are architecturally constructed, resembling edifices or modern sculptures. With synthetic fabrics, asymmetrical hemlines, and austere silhouettes, the looks feel futuristic or post-apocalyptic.
Most intriguing during his London Fashion Week show was the 3-D “flip-book” dresses, cut vertically, almost vortex-like. For Kane, it’s all in the tailoring: “You always need a beautiful structure, it is part of the fundamental building blocks of reality.”
