Amir H. Fallah: Remember My Child…

Katy Donoghue

23 September 2020

Shulamit Nazarian welcomes Amir H. Fallah for his second solo exhibition at the gallery, featuring a series of new large-scale paintings. Over the past decade, Fallah’s practice has probed the history of portraiture. This new series of paintings marks a shift in the artist’s practice as it defies traditional notions of this genre of painting by moving the figure altogether.  The paintings in “Remember My Child…” employ a lexicon of symbols that mark key moments in Fallah’s life and serve as potential coming-of-age lessons, warnings, and ideals the artist wants to pass on to his son. Within the exhibition, the artist also addresses notions of racism and how it is often neutralized through the record of history. The artist challenges history painting from a highly personal perspective and allows multiple perspectives to exist, folding geography and culture into a flattened space and making connections where they normally wouldn’t appear.
