Amy Sherald: The Great American Fact

Amy Sherald: The Great American Fact” is the artist’s first solo West Coast exhibition. At the gallery’s Los Angeles location, Sherald is debuting new paintings that continue her effort—to paint the things she wishes to see, depicting Black Americans in leisure. As American as apple pie (2020) shows a couple in front of a yellow house, drawing similarities to Grant Wood’s American Gothic (1930); An Ocean Away (2020) depicts two figures together in the dunes of a beach; and in A Midsummer Afternoon Dream (2020), a woman rests on a bicycle in front of a white picket fence and a sight sunflowers. These works, among others, underscore the identity of Sherald’s subjects with the presence of visual cues and objects familiar to contemporary Americana.
