Isa Genzken: Works from 1973 to 1983

Katy Donoghue

11 December 2020

An exhibition of early works by German artist Isa Genzken is currently on view at Kunstmuseum Basel. The exhibition explores how Genzken’s early works have been strongly influenced by conceptual and post-minimalist approaches, and showcases more than 60 pieces spanning diverse disciplines—sculpture, drawing, painting, film, installation art, and more. Among the pieces created by the artist between 1973 and 1983, works on view include Ellipsoids and Hyperbolos, a series of sculptures informed by subtle mathematical calculations, accompanied by a collection of large-scale drawings that were crucial in the development of these sculptures. In the exhibition, viewers will also find Genzken’s 120-part series of gouaches entitled The Form Derives from the Fact That Each of the Five Colors Touches Every Other Color (1973).
