Liu Ye: Storytelling

Katy Donoghue

24 September 2020

Liu Ye’s solo exhibition “Storytelling” brings a selection of 35 paintings to Fondazione Prada following its debut iteration at Shanghai’s Prada Rong Zhai in 2018. Curated by Udo Kittelmann, the show features works created from 1992 to the present day, which offer a pleasing visual contrast between the artist’s muted palette and intimate, sensual imagination and the venue’s concrete walls. Including paintings like Bird on Bird, Catherine Deneuve, and The Little Match-seller, the exhibition demonstrates the subjective reality created in Liu Ye’s paintings, which is formed through dualities like the inclusion of elements from invention and reality, and modern art mixed with cues from old masters.
