As part of its annual programme of artist commissions, Whitechapel Gallery presents Can You Hear Me?, a major new work by Indian artist Nalini Malani. Can You Hear Me?, Malani’s first UK commission, is an ensemble of 84 animations projected on the walls of the gallery’s historic interiors. Created between 2017 and 2020, the animations feature overlapping hand-drawn images, notes and fragments of quoted text. Malani gives voice to the marginalized through visual stories exploring themes of violence, feminism, politics, racial tensions, and social inequalities.
