The Burda Brothers

The Burda Brothers

Museum Frieder Burda presents “The Burda Brothers,” an exhibition offering masterpieces of Expressionism from the collection of the 3 brothers Frieder, Hubert and Franz Burda. The exhibition traces the roots of the 3 brother’s collecting activities and examines what a life with and for art can mean.

From Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Gabriele Münter to Max Beckmann, the three brothers owe their first encounter with art to German expressionism. The collection assembled by their parents celebrates the power of colors, like a promise of a fascinating world behind the pictures. At the same time, the collection encouraged the brothers to emancipate from their parent’s legacy and find their own way to the art of their time. “The Burda Brothers” can clearly be described as expressive and colorful. To achieve this, the American contemporary painter Carl Ostendarp designed the setting with murals, based on a sophisticated colour coding system. The works hung on the walls of the space seem like central stages along these imaginary lifelines, fitting perfectly into the playfully created curves and amplitudes of Ostendarp.
