At its West 24th Street location, Gagosian is presenting Theaster Gates’s debut solo exhibition in New York. Featuring several bodies of new work, “Black Vessel” will immerse the entirety of the galleries with an installation that offers a time and space for communities to gather, and acts as a metaphor for embodied existence. Including creations like Gates’s caged hoses, ceramic vessels, and a series of tar paintings, the show follows his practice of exploring cultural reclamation and social empowerment, fueled by concepts of art history and the racial ideology of the Black diaspora.
