Transcending Definition: Jay DeFeo in the 1970s

Katy Donoghue

24 September 2020

“Transcending Definition” at Gagosian brings together a selection of over twenty paintings, photographs, and works on paper made by the late Jay DeFeo during the 1970s. Offering a focused look into DeFeo’s diverse practice, the works on view were created during a period inspired by things found in her everyday life, where the artist captured representations of objects through a lens of abstraction. On view are works like Lotus Eater; pieces from the “Triangle” series; andan untitled drawing from her “Jewelry” series, which transcends the basic form of a wire earring through a study done in acrylic, charcoal, graphite, and ink.
