At Milan Fashion Week, Ferragamo’s Creative Director Maximilian Davis delved into the unrestrained silhouettes of the 1920s for a visionary autumn/winter 2024 collection. Titled “Spirit,” the runway unveiled an intoxicating parade of strategically sheer garments, dropped waists, and free-flowing fabrics, alongside playful masculine and feminine design dualities.
“The 1920s used clothing as a way to celebrate freedom,” stated Davis. “And that expression of freedom is something which resonates with me, with my heritage, and with Ferragamo.”
Ferragamo Echoes Dynamic Female Icons, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford
The enduring force of the era’s most dynamic female icons, from Greta Garbo to Joan Crawford, was imbued into substantial wool coats with sensually rounded and broadened shoulders, gleaming all-leather outfits, and dramatic blanket capes drawn from the brand’s rich archives.
On the runway, an evocative narrative unfolded of free-spirited individuals wearing protective outerwear on the bustling streets before slipping into the secrecy of dimly lit speakeasies; fisherman-inspired coats and thigh-high boots in richly neutral, cosmopolitan hues, gave way to glossy organdie dresses brimming with sequin embroideries and a flurry of feathers.
Warm shades of chic burgundy, luscious caramel, and fiery crimson in skilled meshes of cashmere and wool draped around the figure with the utmost ease, provoking strength, vulnerability, and individuality.
1920s-Inspired Footwear and Surreal Handbags Unveil a Contemporary Free-Spirit
Statement footwear reminiscent of the buoyant 1920s, from nimble T-strap stilettos to enchanting sweetheart-shaped satin pumps, to artistic archival-inspired pieces, distilled designs for contemporary edge. Luxuriously fluid cigarette-heel mules with monk-strap and classic brogue embellishments were the perfect match for elongated fringe garments and posh, utilitarian suits.
The maison’s legendary Hug bag was newly grained, enhanced with surreal feathers, sporting a revitalized monogram; a whimsical mermaid-scale design of 950 laminated leather sequins was revealed, spotlighting the brand’s revered artisans. A fresh and vibrant Fiamma style bag was shown beside the debut of a delicately structured handbag with a Gancini closure, embodying the singular lilies of Florence, the elegant birthplace of Ferragamo.
